Hello everyone who is bored enough to be reading this pointless blog.

Yesterday in first period government, I heard a few people talking about their various interactions on facebook.com
Although I can't remember the exact conversation, it went something like this:
"Hey, did you check your facebook last night?"
"Ya, I was on there for like three hours"
"Did you see that i wrote on your wall?"
"Oh, no but i did get poked like 20 times"
"Ha, did you see what hatched out of that egg that i got?"
...and so on.

From this conversation, I get 2 main impressions about facebook. #1 that people spend multiple hours on it each day, and #2 that it involves walls and poking. The egg i have no idea about.

Lets take the first point. This particular person spent 3 hours on facebook on this particular day. Now lets assume that this time was a little high, and they actually only spend about 1 hour playing with facebook on an average day. With a little simple math we realize that in one month they would have spent a total of 1.25 days "checking" their facebook. The amount of time spent on the site became apparent when i made a profile to find some stuff for this blog. After a total of 5 minutes from the time i sent out friend invites, 2 people had already responded.

"Checking" is a loaded word. Someone might think from what they know of the word, that it means someone logging on to see if they have any new messages. Really checking would involve looking at other user's walls, pictures, or perhaps reading about how mad they are that their boyfriend dumped them.

Maybe this is essential to some people, but from how i see it now, 1.25 days per month is a pretty significant amount of time spent on something that isn't that important. Especally when you look at the bigger picture. 1.25 days per month equals 15 days per year. Even with a job at say-$10 per hour, if that time was spent working, that would be $3600 extra that year. Now, if we're talking about a lifetime, someone would spend the close to 5 years on facebook. What can you do in 5 years? Get a 4-year university degree, graduate and get married.
